Summary

Commissioning a work of art along Maida Vale to create a sense of privacy and a striking landmark.

Context

Plan worked closely with the client and their landscape architects, EDCO Design, to establish a work of public art for this high profile site on Maida Vale. Although installation occurred after all the rest of the building works had been completed, it was nevertheless essential that the work should engage intelligently with its context. The brief to the artist was therefore to consider the architecture of the new building and the surrounding landscaping which included a series of mature trees.

Outcome

The finalised work by sculptor Julian Wild achieves a dual purpose for the development, creating a sense of enclosure within the private space directly in front of the building while not blocking out the light or creating a sense of entrapment. Secondly, Julian’s work provides a powerful icon at the site that gives definition to the front boundary of the development and co-exists well, on account of its fragmented appearance, with the trees around it.
